York takes two from GICC basketball

(York, NE) - The York Dukes would take two from GICC on Tuesday night. Two games carried live on KRGI 1430/105.5. York won the girl's game 47-35. GICC would have a 9-8 lead after the end of the first quarter. Early on in the 2nd quarter York would take a 10-9 lead and never look back. In the third quarter, GICC would tail only by four points, 27-23, with 3:37 left. The Crusaders could not close the gap any further, trailing 36-27 going into the fourth quarter. Mattie Pohl would have 16 points for York to lead the way. GICC would be led by Lucy Ghaifan with 12 points. Ghaifan would have several post looks at the basket, but stout defense from York's Masa Scheierman would prove to be troublesome for the Crusaders throughout the night. York was even able to navigate through the second half in foul trouble. Scheirman (6-1 SR) would have four fouls in the third quarter, Anna Briggs (6-2 JR) for the Dukes had four fouls in the fourth quarter. GICC with the loss is now 9-4. Next action hosting Aquinas on Friday, Jan. 14th. York is now 10-2 on the season. The next action for the Dukes will be on Friday hosting Crete. 

In the boy's game. York and GICC would be tied at 2, York would take a 4-2 lead and from there would hang on to the lead the rest of the game and finish out with a 47-35 victory over the Crusaders. GICC would only score ten points in the first half going into the locker room down 17-10. GICC would cut the deficit down to one point down 24-23. The Dukes would can a three-pointer and then go on a 9-0 run to lead by ten, 33-23, with 3;12 left in the 3rd quarter. The Crusaders would struggle shooting the ball all night. Only one three-pointer was made in the game by GICC senior Marcus Lowry in the 3rd quarter. Ryan Seevers would have 12 points for the Dukes, followed by Garrett Ivy chipping in 11 points. Lowry would have a game-high 13 points for GICC (all in the second half). Gil Jengmer followed with 12 points. York now 6-6 on the season will host Crete on Friday. GICC boys slip to 10-2 and will host Aquinas Friday, Jan. 14th.
